In den letzten drei Jahren haben wir schon viele beeindruckende Orte in British Columbia gesehen - die Othello Tunnels in der Nähe von Hope sind für uns sicher unter den Spitzenreitern...
Over the past three years we have been lucky enough to catch a glimpse or two of some awesome sights in British Columbia - the Othello Tunnels near Hope were certainly one of the highlights...
Auf dem Weg von Merritt nach Vancouver (Highway 5) liegt das Städtchen Hope und nur ein paar Minuten ausserhalb sind die Othello Tunnels. Vom Parkplatz aus ist es ein 10-minütiger Spaziergang zu den Tunnels, entlang des Coquihalla River.
Die Tunnel wurden im frühen 20. Jahrhundert für den Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) gebaut. Die Schienen sind mittlerweile lange verschwunden und die Tunnel ein Teil des Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park.
Nicht nur die Tunnel sind beeindruckend, auch die Schlucht, an der sich die Züge entlangschlängeln mussten, flößt Respekt ein. Im Frühjahr nach der Schneeschmelze verwandelt sich der Fluß in ein tosendes Monster...
Ausserdem haben die Othello Tunnels und vor allem der Coquihalla Canyon richtige Starqualitäten: hier wurde 1981 der Film Rambo gefilmt.
Unsere Kinder waren ebenfalls begeistert, also ist der nächste Trip dorthin schon geplant!
The town of Hope, BC is located right off Highway 5, between Merritt and Vancouver. Only a few minutes outside of town are the famous Othello Tunnels. It's a leisurely 10 min. walk from the parking lot to the tunnels, along the Coquihalla River.
The tunnels were built in the early part of the 20th century, to provide room for the tracks of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR). The railroad tracks are long gone now and the tunnels are part of the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park.
But not only the tunnels left us in awe, just imagining a train running high above the canyon with the river wild below blew our minds. The river turns into a monster every spring after the snow melts and rushes through the canyon with a deafening sound...
Of course the Othello tunnels also have real star qualities - the movie Rambo was filmed in the canyon by the tunnels in 1981.
Our kids loved it, so we are sure to come back this year!
