To become Canadian or not - that is the question...
Ende 2011 jährt sich unser "permanent resident" Status in Kanada zum dritten Mal. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt könnte ich dann - wenn ich will - die kanadische Staatsbürgerschaft beantragen.
Über 18 bin ich ja, dann auch drei Jahre offizieller Einwanderer und Englisch geht ebenfalls einigermaßen - fehlt nur noch der Einwanderungstest und ich darf den Eid ablegen...
Der Test besteht aus Fragen zur kanadischen Geschichte und Geographie, ausserdem geht es um das Regierungssystem und die Rechte und Pflichten des Staatsbürgers. Scheint leicht zu bewältigen - aber die Frage bleibt: Kanadier werden oder nicht?
Deutschland erlaubt keine duale Staatsbürgerschaft, also wäre ich "nur" Kanadierin. Obwohl ich mir sicher bin, nicht mehr nach Deutschland zurück zu wollen, diese Entscheidung fällt nicht leicht. Bin ich dann Kanadierin und meine Kinder erst wenn sie 18 sind?
Wenn ich mich mit anderen Einwanderern unterhalte, die ihre Argumente für die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft auf den Tisch legen, kann ich diese (zumindest für mich) immer entkräften. Ein Bekannter sagte zum Beispiel er bleibe Deutscher, damit seine Kinder (die er noch gar nicht hat) später mal in Deutschland studieren können, weil es dort nichts kostet...
Abgesehen davon, dass mich so ein Blödsinn zum Schmunzeln bringt (er hat nämlich noch nicht mal eine Frau), würde das kanadische Abitur an einer deutschen Uni sowieso nicht anerkannt.
Kanadier werden oder nicht? Eine schwierigere Entscheidung als ich dachte - aber ich habe ja Zeit, und die Devise lautet (wie immer hier): No worries!

I am definitely over 18, will have had my green card for three years and I am getting by with my English - the last hurdle will be the citizenship test and I can take the oath and then belong to the Queen...
The test consists of questions about Canadian geography and history, as well as government, rights and responsibilities of citizens. Doesn't seem to be a problem, but one question remains: To become Canadian or not?
Germany does not allow dual citizenship, so I would end up "only" being Canadian. Even though I am sure that I won't go back to Germany, the decision is not an easy one. Should I be a Canadian and my kids can't be until they are 18?
When I talk to other immigrants about their reasons for keeping the German citizenship, I usually consider those reasons quite irrelevant (at least as far as I am concerned). One of the guys I talked to said that he will keep his German citizenship so he can send his kids off to college over there, since it's free. Now that's a load of bull to me, since he neither has any kids yet nor would German universities accept a Canadian High School diploma as qualification...
So - to become Canadian or not? It's a tougher decision than I expected. However, there is no rush and the motto (as usual) is: No worries!
