I became yet a wee bit more Canadian this week - I signed up as a volunteer for the Great Canadian Bike Rally, coming to Merritt for the first time in July 2011...
Ich helfe schon gerne mal hier und da aus, aber ich muss zugeben, so richtig über fast 2 Monate hinweg zu etwas verpflichten, das war bisher nicht so mein Ding. Es gibt immer was wichtigeres zu tun, Termine hier, Kinder sind krank da, und überhaupt...
Aber meine Mitmenschen hier in Merritt haben mich überzeugt, es doch mal zu probieren. Es ist wirklich erstaunlich, wie viele Leute hier Ehrenämter belegen. Und auch noch mit Begeisterung!
Nachdem mein Sohn auch Ambitionen an den Tag gelegt hat "zu helfen" (solange es nicht damit zu tun hat, sein Zimmer aufzuräumen), sind wir also zum Verwaltungsbüro der Rally gestiefelt und haben uns angemeldet - und wurden mit offenen Armen empfangen.
Ich konnte sofort ein bißchen besser nachvollziehen, warum so viele Leute ihre Zeit fürs Ehrenamt opfern - es fühlt sich einfach gut an, wenn man (und die Dienste, die man leistet) so richtig geschätzt wird!
Bei aller Begeisterung für meine neue Ehrenamts-Leidenschaft - für Klassenfahrten und Wandertage reichen meine Ambitionen nicht, und jetzt habe ich ja dafür auch leider keine Zeit mehr, ich helfe ja bei der Rally mit...
I've never minded helping out here and there, but to commit to something for about 2 months, that's a first for me. There was always something more important, appointments here, kids sick there and anyway...
But the legions of volunteers here in Merritt really got me curious, I just had to try it. It's amazing how many people here volunteer and they seem to be loving it!
Since my son also started showing volunteering ambitions (for anything that is not related to cleaning his room) we went down to the Rally office and signed up. And guess what - they were really happy to have us!
I could instantly tell why people give up their personal time to volunteer - it is a really good feeling to be genuinely appreciated.
Even with my newly found love for volunteering, there just is not enough love to make me volunteer for a school field-trip, and anyway, I don't have time for that, I'm helping out with the Rally...
